How the bathroom budget is calculated
For each surface, material cost equals area × tile price per square foot × (1 + material allowance ÷ 100). Labor equals measured area × your labor rate. We add demolition, preparation, grout and adhesive, and any other expenses, then apply contingency to that subtotal. Currency line items are rounded to cents before totaling.
Measure floors and walls separately using the bathroom quantity calculator. The main tile calculator handles tile counts, package rounding, and tile-only pricing; this tool adds the installation budget. Do not multiply a contractor’s complete project quote by the area.
Example using hypothetical rates
A 40 sq ft floor with tile at $4 per sq ft and labor at $8 per sq ft has $176 of tile with a 10% material allowance, plus $320 labor. Add $100 removal, $150 preparation, and $60 grout and adhesive: the subtotal is $806. A 10% contingency adds $80.60, giving $886.60. These numbers illustrate the arithmetic; they are not recommended or typical US rates.
What to include in your quote
Check whether labor includes demolition, hauling, substrate repairs, waterproofing, and setting materials before entering extras. Include shower surfaces only once. If a niche, trim, shower pan, or mosaic floor has a separate charge, put it in Other costs or calculate that portion separately. Plumbing, electrical work, fixtures, and permits are excluded unless you enter their costs.
Use the bathroom tiling cost guide to review cost factors, and the box purchasing guide to reconcile your material allowance with actual cartons. For shower geometry, use the shower tile estimator.
